{"id":90226,"date":"2026-03-03T13:41:49","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T13:41:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bigbossbattle.com\/?p=90226"},"modified":"2026-03-06T13:42:04","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T13:42:04","slug":"warhounds-playtest-preview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bigbossbattle.com\/warhounds-playtest-preview\/","title":{"rendered":"Warhounds Playtest &#8211; In for a woof time?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><b>The playtest for <\/b><b><i>Warhounds<\/i><\/b><b> shows promise, but the limited slice doesn\u2019t give away much that would make it stand out.<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve just finished running through the closed playtest for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warhounds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it certainly seems like a fun take on the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">XCOM<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> formula. With that said, there isn\u2019t a huge amount to play with at the moment, and beyond a couple of neat character abilities, the bulk of what you can see at the moment is the fairly standard grid-based tactical cover shooter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a plot, of course. You\u2019ll head up the titular <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warhounds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who are a mercenary group sent into a nonspecific African country currently undergoing civil unrest. In the tutorial mission, I rescued the country\u2019s president and fought off insurgents before setting off to \u201cliberate\u201d a ship off the coast which will act as your base. Then I hired a few mercs to bolster the ranks and played one mission with no hand holding before this brief chunk of game ended.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_90228\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90228\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-90228\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-b3bucket.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/14184348\/20260210184043_1.jpg\" alt=\"Warhounds\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3-b3bucket.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/14184348\/20260210184043_1.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/s3-b3bucket.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/14184348\/20260210184043_1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/s3-b3bucket.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/14184348\/20260210184043_1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/s3-b3bucket.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/14184348\/20260210184043_1-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/s3-b3bucket.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/14184348\/20260210184043_1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/s3-b3bucket.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/14184348\/20260210184043_1-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/s3-b3bucket.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/14184348\/20260210184043_1-600x338.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-90228\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">XCOM players will feel at home quite quickly.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though it\u2019s only a small slice of the full game, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warhounds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does demonstrate some promising gameplay. The turn-based tactical missions are serviceable, if a little simplistic when compared to other games. You\u2019ll move from cover to cover and abuse overwatch to take out groups of enemy soldiers. Positioning is important, with flanking being a key system, much like in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">XCOM<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the like.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warhounds\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> blurb says you shouldn\u2019t expect RNG to be a factor in your shooting, but you\u2019ll still be given percentage chances to hit. I think this may be referring to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">XCOM\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tendency to have you miss 95% chance to hit shots quite regularly. The percentages here feel fair, and if you take a 75% chance shot with a burst fire rifle, you\u2019ll hit with a couple of rounds and plink off some damage. The characters in the tutorial missions have more interesting abilities, like being able to give allies turn points or destroy cover with heavy fire. Hopefully in the full game there will be plenty of options like this, along with the ability to customise your soldiers for that old \u201cfriends as characters\u201d thing that\u2019s popular in games like this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ironically, the presentation is a bit more hit-and-miss. Everything looks fine enough, and things look clear on the battlefield, but character models are pretty basic for the most part. This isn\u2019t an issue in itself, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warhounds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t run all that well in spite of not being the most visually special game. I\u2019m not running a monster PC, but when it can run <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bigbossbattle.com\/clair-obscura-expedition-33-review\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clair Obscur<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at 120 fps, then it shouldn\u2019t really struggle to maintain 60 here. It\u2019s early days though, so perhaps optimisation will come with the full game. I should also mention the use of AI here, with placeholder images being used. The devs don\u2019t seem to have English as their first language, so I accept that there will be some oddities here and there, but some of the dialogue comes across as laughable. Then there\u2019s the voice acting which is painfully stilted and unnatural. It sounds like they have native English speakers reading the lines, but everything feels incredibly false with inter character dialogue not fitting together in the slightest. Initially I thought this was text-to-speech, but there\u2019s no acknowledgement of that in the Steam page, so I assume this to be genuine people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With those complaints out the way though, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warhounds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems to be a solid enough turn-based tactical game. It will need some significant fleshing out, but the bones are there for when it has a full release later in the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warhounds is scheduled for full release later in 2026 on Steam.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even though it\u2019s only a small slice of the full game, Warhounds does demonstrate some promising gameplay.
