From the creative minds at Hungry Minds \u2014 the studio behind\u00a0<\/span>The Book<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>The Last Book<\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u2014 comes their latest creation.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0simply called\u00a0<\/span>The Puzzle \u2014 Octopolis. <\/span><\/i>I am starting to see a pattern in how they name things.<\/span> Not the most imaginative series name, sure, but after spending time with it, you quickly realise the series name is definitely the least interesting thing about it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Hungry Minds has a habit of taking things we already understand and then quietly pulling the rug out from under us.\u00a0<\/span>The Puzzle \u2014 Octopolis<\/span><\/i> is no different. It takes an activity most of us have done at some point in our lives and turns it into something that feels unfamiliar, surprising, and – most importantly – special. Whether you are an amateur or hardcore dissectionist, Then Octopolis is frankly THE puzzle for you.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Puzzles, after all, started life as educational tools in the 18th century, when maps were dissected and sold as \u201cdissected maps\u201d. In that sense,\u00a0<\/span>Octopolis<\/span><\/i>\u00a0feels like a worthy descendant of that idea, even if what\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0teaching you is patience, observation, and how easily your brain can be tricked.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Opening the box for the first time feels less like unboxing a product and more like uncovering something. This is a Hungry Minds hallmark, and it works just as well here. Almost\u00a0immediately, it feels both new and strangely familiar \u2014 like an object you\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0know you were missing, but somehow always wanted.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The user experience and production quality are exactly what you\u2019d expect from Hungry Minds: excellent. Opening the box, you\u2019re greeted by a beautifully designed card, followed by a Velcro-sealed bag containing the pieces. No cheap plastic in sight. Everything about it reinforces that odd but delightful balance of something that feels both freshly made and gently aged.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For full transparency, I am not a puzzle person. I love escape rooms, hidden compartments, and puzzles built around discovery, but traditional jigsaws have never really been my thing.\u00a0My better half, on the other hand, is very much in the puzzle camp. For me once\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0got the picture in front of you, the challenge often feels a bit\u2026 flat\u00a0(yes, I went there).\u00a0At least,\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0how\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0always felt to me.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This iteration of The Puzzle<\/span><\/i>\u00a0completely obliterates that preconception.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lift out the bag of pieces and\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0notice two packages sitting beneath it.\u00a0They\u2019re\u00a0impossible to\u00a0miss, yet\u00a0feel deliberately hidden. One firmly tells you not to open it until the puzzle is complete, and if\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0experienced Hungry Minds before,\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0know better than to ignore that instruction. The second envelope gives you permission to open\u00a0it, but\u00a0warns that the puzzle is more enjoyable\u00a0–\u00a0and more difficult\u00a0-if you\u00a0don\u2019t. It\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0take a genius to guess that the image lives inside.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Naturally, you might be\u00a0thinking:\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019ll\u00a0just use the box art<\/span><\/i>. And yes, you can. But the box art is mostly text, and the actual image only\u00a0represents\u00a0a\u00a0portion\u00a0of the puzzle itself.\u00a0You\u2019re\u00a0not being given much help here.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0more box than art, and that feels entirely intentional.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Then\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0the artwork itself.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0stunning. Not in a polite, \u201cthat\u2019s a nice picture\u201d way, but in a\u00a0<\/span>get-lost-in-the-details-for-far-too-long<\/span><\/i>\u00a0way. Every centimetre is packed with hand-drawn detail, and the\u00a0Octopolis\u00a0steampunk world genuinely feels alive. There are nods to Captain Nemo, Flash Gordon, and John Carter of Mars scattered throughout, and once the puzzle is complete,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0absolutely something\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0want to argue about hanging on your wall.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But the real twist comes when you start assembling it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You think you know how puzzles work. Find the edge pieces. Build the border. Work your way inward.\u00a0Also,\u00a0great advice on how to butter bread \u2013 take care of the edges, and the middle looks after itself. Except here, that logic betrays you almost\u00a0immediately. An edge piece might not actually be an edge piece at all. Familiar silhouettes\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0be trusted. Shapes lie.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Small pieces, large pieces, unusual pieces, edges that slide together, rounded edges, overlapping edges. This series of design decisions adds a new layer to the\u00a0experience,\u00a0and it feels more three dimensional, even though\u00a0it’s\u00a0very much flat on your table. You\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0approach\u00a0<\/span>The Puzzle\u00a0<\/span><\/i>in a mechanical way like other\u00a0puzzles;\u00a0you become engaged with the\u00a0whole process.\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s\u00a0challenging in a way that feels deliberate rather than frustrating, and it constantly keeps you on your toes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In true Hungry Minds fashion, this first foray into <\/span>The Puzzle<\/span><\/i>\u00a0takes something old and gives it new life. It respects the history of puzzles while gleefully refusing to play by the rules\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0all learned.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The real question\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0whether you can complete\u00a0<\/span>The Puzzle<\/span><\/i><\/a> \u2014 Octopolis<\/em>.<\/span>
