More and more developers are seeking to rekindle the games of their youth and either replicate or build-upon the experiences that they had in their own early years.

Video games and how we talk about them is always changing, but one genre which has remained relatively consistent in how we discuss them is the humble RPG. While, in the early 90s, an RPG was a game where players specifically took on the role of, and development of, a hero, over time the levelling and experience-based systems have spread further into other genres. Theoretically, the Zelda games shifted from puzzle-solving and exploration-focused adventure genre into the RPG one early in their life — and that causes a little confusion.

But, when we talk about RPGs now we tend to be discussing games where the main character can level-up and improve as the game continues, or where enemies receive numerals of damage, each worked out by math which churns away in the background.

Over the next collection of pages we are going to list off our favourite Indie RPGs on PC — a very tricky job, considering how loose-fitting the genre is. If you think we’ve missed something off then leave a comment and we’ll make sure to revisit.

Dungeons of Dredmor

The dungeon-diving roguelike genre is almost certainly at one extreme of the RPG genre – and there’s easily enough of them that we could write a whole different list. But, we whittled the entire genre down to one, standout game among them, and that is Gaslight Games’ fantastic Dungeons of Dredmor.

Video games are, for the most part, utterly ridiculous, and the more you think about it the more that becomes apparent. The roguelike-rpg is this especially so because it operates on loose frameworks, with procedural level design taking over the rest. It makes perfect sense then that somebody makes a game populated with ridiculous things, silly enemies to fight, odd items and equipment to use, and a character-class designer that exists outside of any previously seen framework.

Dungeons of Dredmor takes a very tough, grindy subgenre and pumps it full of colour and humour. It is a game where you can specialise in astrology, and defeat enemies by throwing baseballs at them. It’s dumb fun done well.

HellSign

Still plodding along in Early Access at the time of writing, Ballistic Interactive’s HellSign originally released in 2018. It fuses together an isometric viewpoint — which is incredibly common in aRPGs — with a slow investigative playstyle.

In HellSign you take on the role of, essentially, a supernatural verminator. Each job you take on has you collating clues and information to try and figure out which horror you are going to be facing off against before you face off against it.

There’s heavy RPG item-management as well as a whole plethora of tools at your disposal to help investigate the scene. The fact that you can go from shining a blacklight on tracks one minute to blasting your shotgun at shadows in the next is utterly unprecedented.

Our reviewer Rob dived into HellSign back when it first launched into Early Access and wrote: “Silent Hill meets Monster Hunter? I don’t think there’s anything I don’t like about that combination.”

Definitely the most supernatural entry in our list of the top indie RPGs on PC — but well deserving of its place.

Cat Quest II

Back when the first Cat Quest game released in 2017 it melted hearts with its cute, colourful world. For me though, it was something different. I remember spotting it while it passed through Steam Greenlight, I wrote that I was most impressed with how The Gentlebros handled the game’s overworld.

For me, some of the most memorable RPGs have had large world-maps which span many screens. Cat Quest, and its sequel, both scale the world at multiple times, but you still fight enemies at each level at exactly the same scale. In many ways that could be a shortcut to avoid dragging you into a new environment for a fight, but really it just pulls the whole aesthetic together.

Our reviewer, Alex, wrote that Cat Quest II was “Great for players of all ages and a welcome change from over complicated, ultra difficult, gore soaked realism, instead offering a charming, well illustrated and relaxing jaunt through a story laced with canine and feline based puns and wordplay.” in his review.

Disco Elysium

Disco Elysium is a masterclass in game’s writing, and it has the awards to play it. I don’t think the writing in the game can be put any better than our own JD Saltz wrote in his review:

“Want to play a tireless revolutionary who drags communism and labor into every conversation? You can. Prefer to role-play a sexist pig, the kind of guy who probably ends every conversation with a female with the words “baby,” or “doll?” Okay. That is an option. Feeling more like a capitalist who wants to preach the gospel of the free market, or perhaps a supernatural detective attuned to the call of a world beyond our own? You can do all of this. Disco Elysium is committed to allowing the player wide and startling freedom.”

While it certainly might not toe the classic, combat-centric RPG line, the statistic based combat resolution is delivered to a quality previously unseen in the genre. It is like somebody write a linear game and then let a dozen people build off of each point until it became a sweeping, branching story.

Legrand Legacy

For a lot of people, the RPG genre starts and ends with jRPGs. That’s understandable, as the Playstation-era saw jRPG franchises rocket into popularity in the West, and that console generation sent reverberations throughout the industry for years. Legrand Legacy takes heavy influence from RPG series which thrived during that era.

Featuring a densely-packed fantasy story and a QTE-powered combat system, Legrand Legacy has you go from commanding a single fighter at the start to heading up a massive army. The scope is massive, and, in many ways, that makes it feel like it fits right in with those PS1-era jRPGs which had you going from weak pleb through to the world’s only hope.

Is Legrand Legacy the only jRPG in our list of the best indie RPGs on PC? You’ll have to read on.

Survivalist

Survivalist isn’t pretty. In fact, even when it launched, it felt like it was using a lot of outdated technology. I remember spotting it on XBLIG and hesitating before clicking though, the store page icon making it look extremely low budget… but what was inside was a brilliant open-world RPG which did incredibly clever things with it’s UX.

That little window that you see in the top right is a kind of ‘focus cam’ for the main character. The developer decided that one of the strongest ways to convey information was in incredibly in-your-face action cameras — showing the people you talk to, or facing characters as they shoot, or zombies as they bolt toward you. It’s a little jarring at first, but after a while it becomes excessively cinematic, and while it is really campy it feels just brilliant.

Serpent in the Staglands

When it comes to cRPGs they can be quite divisive. Serpent in the Staglands is definitely divisive, and I feel like I’ve seen the popularity of it wax and wane many times over the five years that it’s been released.

The long and the short of it is that Serpent in the Staglands is incredibly unforgiving. Much like the first Baldur’s Gate game, you start at level 1 with absolutely nothing to your name. Expect to die, expect to reload, expect to reroll new characters. But, once things start to click then it really starts to come together. Aside from ‘being unforgiving’, a big focus of the game was on its vastness. It’s specifically open world, which as an isometric cRPG definitely sounds a little daunting. That’s for a reason, there’s a lot of bad people out there, and with few pointers and critical NPCs to guide you on your path you’ll need to be smart choosing where to stop as you explore the deadly Staglands.

Transistor

Bastion was an absolutely fantastic aRPG which stringed together beautiful art, tight gameplay and a memorable narrator, but today we’re talking about the next game from the studio: Transistor.

Transistor takes classic aRPG controls in a different direction. Most entries in the genre are about being more powerful than the average enemy and, basically, causing a lot of damage in a certain area. Ranged characters cause an ‘area of death’ away from them, while melee characters do so in a small orbit around them. Most else is flair. Transistor not only piles on the story within a fantastic, sci-fi setting, but it also bolts an exceptional combat system on top of the standard hack-and-slash. Instead of hammering or holding buttons until the enemies are all batted away you’ll instead be carefully planning a path through your foes through a smart time-manipulation system.

The Age of Decadence

I don’t see many people talking about The Age of Decadence anymore, and that’s a massive shame considering that, in many ways, it feels like it prefaced these final stages of the return of classic, isometric cRPG. It’s not just that though, it did it within an absolutely amazing setting; First impressions might have you thinking it’s set within a twisted Greco-Latin setting, however, the world itself is actually a post-apocalyptic, crumbling world full of references and nods to crumbling cultures from throughout history.

It’s mechanically deep too, with a story filled with choices which do echo after you as you continue your journey, and the story itself feels like more of a mystery than trying to figure out how to save the world — after all, for most people in the world it had already ended.

Torchlight

Torchlight is probably one of the premiere action RPG series out there, and while the origins of the developers Runic Games certainly gave them a little bit more of a headstart than smaller, indie developers, the level of quality content that filled out Torchlight‘s world was completely unprecedented when it released. If you’re looking for an aRPG that’s not only stuffed full of content but leans on randomisation features AND has a great art style then you really don’t need to look much further than this (at time of writing) 11 year-old classic. And, well, if you’re looking for something more modern, they’ve made another two since.

Streets of Rogue

Chaotic and procedural-heavy, Streets of Rogue takes a modern setting, lumps a whole bunch of roguelike-style content in it and then shoves the player in it in real-time. It makes for quite a high chaos, especially as elements of the game lean on other genres too, with stealth able to play a major part in your playstyle if you are able to wrangle it.

We wrote about it back in 2017, but it’s come a long way in the time since. For instance, just last month they released the 91st (full) version of the game, with patches coming almost every month.

West of Loathing

Last, but definitely not least comes West of Loathing. It’s part adventure and part RPG, leaning heavily on jRPG tropes. That said don’t let it’s genre define it, West of Loathing is probably one of the most fun games that I’ve played in ages. The creators, who are best known for also making the exceptional Kingdom of Loathing, have brought their iconic humour (and art style) beyond the webpage and, frankly, have done a brilliant job of it.

Almost everything that can be made into a joke is made into a joke, and it’s sure to make even the most stubborn player smile. Oh, and sure, the gameplay itself is pretty great too, especially if you’ve fond memories of jRPG classics.
