We review hundreds of board games, and with so many coming out, it’s hard to tell which the best of the best are. To help out with this, we’ve created Big Boss Battle’s Best 50 Board Games We’ve Ever Reviewed list. It may not be as definitive an opinion as suggesting that these games are the best we’ve ever played, but it is a list of the best games that we’ve played through in detail, more than four or five times and, in most cases, still return to when the fancy takes us.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Board games come in all shapes and sizes (and we don’t just mean the boxes) and that’s part of the charm of board games. That makes a task like pulling together the top fifty of them an incredibly ambitious task. And, as with video games, there are some people who prefer to play certain types of games; party gaming, wargaming, and euro games are all vastly different.<\/p>\n

So, considering that we have several groups of board gaming reviewers, who each have their own speciality, we’ve made an extra effort to try and highlight our shared favourites, and to weigh up each board game’s position here not just by individual reviewer’s opinion but by the actual stickiness of the game \u2014 the likelihood we are to recommend these games to friends just so that we can pull it down from the shelf and give it another go again.<\/p>\n

If you’re in the market for a new game, you could do a lot worse than scan through this list for something that really takes your fancy; these are some of the best games to hold our attention over our many years of reviewing games.<\/p>\n

In brief:<\/strong> Tyrants of the Underdark <\/em>has the honour being perhaps the most well-know area control game based entirely on the Dungeons & Dragons universe. In this fairly unassuming but extremely well crafted game from Gale Force Nine, each player takes on the role of a dastardly Dark Elf who wishes to wrestle control of the Underdark from their rivals. Using two of six decks of included monster factions, you will recruit new creatures, play cards and expand your influence. A real hidden gem. You can read more about it, in our review<\/a>.<\/p>\n

49: Inbetween<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Where Inbetween<\/em> is concerned, fans of Netflix series Stranger Things will feel immediately at home. This small box, two-player game pitches the forces of good and evil against each other for control of a small town that centres on the portal between two worlds. 48: The Quest for El Dorado<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong> In the Quest for El Dorado, players build a modular map from various tiles, then they shuffle and draw from a standard deck of cards. From there, each player must hack, swim, climb and negotiate their way through a thick jungle to find the fabled lost city. 47: The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong> With its beautiful artwork and solid game mechanics, The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game <\/em>is an incredibly evocative way to explore Tolkien’s wider universe. The most recent core set (review below) now includes all the cards you need for a four player game, and there are more than enough expansions available to keep you busy for months. 46: Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong> The original Libertalia<\/em> has long awaited an update due to certain historic references that aren’t welcome these days, but when Stonemaier Games decided to reboot it, the chances amount to more than just a visual update. 45: Clash of Cultures: Monumental Edition<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong> As a mixed-media gaming website, it would be remiss of us not to focus on board game adaptations of popular video games wherever possible. Whilst Clash of Cultures: Monumental Edition<\/em> is not a direct adaptation of your favourite civ game,<\/em> it is without doubt the one that “feels” most like it. 44: Sheriff of Nottingham (Second Edition)<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Few games feature open negotiation as finely balanced as that of Sheriff of Nottingham <\/i>– and even fewer keep you laughing throughout! A game of bluffing, double-dealing and deception, this second edition features new artwork (which is not to all tastes) and a few minor additions, but is now much more readily available than its forebear. 43: Renegade<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0The debut game from long time YouTuber and blogger, Ricky Royal, Renegade<\/em> is a complex and thematic area control, drafting and hand management game that is only playable solo or cooperatively. Renegade<\/em> is fairly heavy, with complex rules and lots of colloquial language, but it’s worth persevering with, especially if you do appreciate a challenging puzzle to solve. 42: Through the Ages: a New Story of Civilization<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Through the Ages<\/em> is\u00a0Vlaada Chv\u00e1til’s magnum opus, and it has held its position in the top three games of all time on BoardGameGeek consistently since it was first released. Through the Ages<\/em> is a stiflingly heavy but beautifully realised interpretation of Sid Meier’s Civilization<\/em> series that plays out over three to four hours. 41: Railroad Rivals<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0If you’re looking for a fast paced, simple to learn railroad game that isn’t Ticket to Ride<\/em>, then you could do a lot worse than to consider Railroad Rivals<\/em>. This light, fun, stock trading and route building game is one of our favourite train games and I particularly like how it weaves just a few basic core mechanics together in a cohesive, easy to follow way. 40: Bunny Kingdom<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong> There’s always room at B3 Towers for an anthropomorphic drafting and area control game from the creator of Magic: The Gathering<\/em>, but even if that weren’t true, then Bunny Kingdom<\/em> would have a pass just for being so darn cute. As it happens, Bunny Kingdom<\/em> is more than just a pretty face \u2014 it’s a tight, fast paced and beautiful looking game that is sure to appeal to a wide range of players. 39: Aristeia!<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Although the last few years have seen a strong resurgence in arena based tabletop blood sports, it’s been a while since I saw such a game that truly innovated. Aristeia!<\/em> does exactly that, delivering a tight, team based miniatures game that uses highly individual personalities and card driven gameplay to excite players of all abilities and ages. 38: Kashgar<\/i><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0We’ve had deck building games, drafting games and hand management games, but what about caravan building games? In Kashgar<\/em>, the players must fill out three separate caravans filled with character cards, all of whom have a role to play in trading spices and fulfilling orders. This excellent card game is compact, fast and fun, so check out our detailed write up<\/a>.<\/p>\n

37: Chronicles of Crime<\/i><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0A few of the games on this list feature integration with mobile apps and other technology, but Chronicles of Crime<\/em> is the only one to use augmented reality that simply requires the players to have a modern smartphone. On top of that, it’s a clever, attractive and very, very enjoyable detective mystery that innovates in all the right ways without losing sight of what makes a good tabletop game. 36: 1066: Tears to Many Mothers<\/i><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Historic card games come around relatively infrequently and when they do, they never look as incredible as 1066<\/em>. A one or two player game that recreates the most pivotal battle in English history in glorious technicolour, 1066<\/em> is fast paced, straightforward and fiercely competitive. 35: Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0The very first “proper” board game that BigBossBattle reviewed<\/a> still has a place in our hearts, thanks in no small part to the fact that our resident Editor in Chief and the Head of Tabletop actually played a number of the games running up to this review remotely via Skype. Traditionally, Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective<\/em> is a deep, immersive scenario based mystery game that also happens to be a ton of fun.<\/p>\n

34: Axis and Allies: Anniversary Edition<\/i><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Perhaps the most logical step after mastering Risk<\/em> for many players, Axis and Allies<\/em> has been a household name for over thirty years. The version we reviewed earlier this year was the Anniversary Edition<\/em>, which supports six players and is played on three mounted boards. This mammoth undertaking replicates World War II on an epic, global scale. Our review<\/a> is not to be missed.<\/p>\n

33: Tokaido<\/i><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Taking a deserved seat at the table is the zen-like racing game Tokaido<\/em>, which has players making a pilgrimage across middle-ages Japan. Collect trinkets, visit temples and assemble in inns to share meals \u2014 however you choose to do it, this victory point collection game uses an unusual movement mechanic to force clever decision making without sacrificing speed of play. 32: Red Dragon Inn 7<\/i><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Perhaps a surprise to some (but not to those who’ve played it) Red Dragon Inn 7<\/em> is a rip-roaring game about drinking, betting and brawling in any tavern you can imagine set in any fantasy universe. Slugfest Games wisely chose to build their flagship hand management game around interesting and unique characters that are interchangeable from one game to the next. 31: Seize the Bean<\/i><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Whilst still not readily available, this 2018 Kickstarter warmed us with its delightful artwork and fast paced, fun gameplay. Each player must build their own thematic coffee shop, with the aim being to attract the most valuable custom. Do you invest in potted plants or better barista’s? The choice is yours. 30: Fire in the Library<\/i><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Another Kickstarter, this time featuring a very cheeky push your luck mechanic that has players acting as librarians that must rush back and forth to rescue books from their burning collection. Charming artwork and a ton of mechanical personality characterise this worthy small box game. You can read more about it in our preview, here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

29: Stuffed Fables<\/i><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0From the creator of the extremely popular Mice & Mystics<\/em> comes Stuffed Fables<\/em>, a game that is played on a high quality, ring bound storybook filled with small, detailed boards. Stuffed Fables<\/em> is a game about a team of soft toys who must rescue their human child from the nasties under the bed. Not as scary as it sounds, Stuffed Fables<\/em> is literally the best game for families to play together during dark nights and rainy Sundays. Here’s our review<\/a>.<\/p>\n

28: Rise to Nobility<\/i><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Set in the same world as Cavern Tavern<\/em> (which we’ll be reviewing in early 2019) Rise to Nobility<\/em> is a big budget Kickstarter that comes with all the bells and whistles. Superb artwork, a box that is packed to the rafters and several bundled variants and expansions mean that you’ll never run out of things to do. 27: King of Tokyo Monster Box<\/i><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0King of Tokyo<\/em>\u00a0is one of the most iconic tabletop games of recent years, which is no surprise given that it is the creation of Richard Garfield \u2014 the man behind Magic: The Gathering<\/em>. King of Tokyo Monster Box<\/em> is nothing like Magic<\/em>, however, since it features madcap dice rolling in a world where monsters face off to be crowned… The King of Tokyo<\/em>. In brief:<\/strong> In Phil Walker-Harding’s Spellbook<\/em>, players act as sorcerers seeking to cast powerful spells. Collect mana of different colours, set up your spellbook and build up your engine to make future turns even more powerful. 25: Dark Souls: The Board Game<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong> Dark Souls: The Board Game<\/em> was always a good implementation of the board game, but with the newest core sets (The Tomb of Giants<\/em> and the Painted World of Aramis<\/em>) the ante has been upped considerably. These sets are the perfect way for any videogame fan to make the leap into board games, and you can read more about it here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

24: Azul<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Arguably the game of Christmas 2017 and winner of many awards, Azul<\/em> remains a steadfast choice when introducing new players to modern board games. With fast gameplay, attractive components and a very simple learning curve, Azul<\/span><\/em> has a lot of positives going for it, even despite the introduction of a sequel in late 2018. 23: Root<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0The second game from Leder Games to appear in our list, Root <\/em>is even more ambitious about its asymmetrical setup than Vast<\/em> is. Although there are fewer different roles to play, each one is wildly different, making Root<\/em> a eurogame, a war game, a programming game and something akin to a hand management game all at once. 22: Lords of Waterdeep<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Whilst Lords of Waterdeep<\/span> is a longstanding classic for some, it may be completely new to tabletop players who are taking their first steps into the hobby. Whatever your perspective, Lords of Waterdeep<\/span><\/em> is undeniably one of the best entry points into worker placement games, especially if you enjoy the thematic crossover with the Dungeons & Dragons<\/em> universe, which is deeply ingrained here. 21: 7 Wonders: Second Edition<\/i><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong> Whilst 7 Wonders<\/em> isn’t a new game, we didn’t get our hands on it until early 2023 when we received a copy of the fantastic 7 Wonders: 2nd Edition<\/em>. This edition brings new artwork and components, whilst retaining almost identical gameplay to the original release. This evergreen classic is popular for a reason, as you’ll discover in my review<\/a>.<\/p>\n

20: Dead of Winter<\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Whilst already superseded by its own semi-sequel and more recently by Gen 7<\/em>, which also features the Crossroads system of play, Dead of Winter<\/em> remains perhaps the best zombie-centric survival horror game on the market. With hidden roles and secret scenarios, a dynamic story, a ton of unique characters and the excellent use of standee’s, Dead of Winter<\/em> is well worth your time. Here’s our review<\/a>.<\/p>\n

19: Viticulture<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0One for the wine lovers, or especially for the lovers of both wine and board games at the same time, Viticulture<\/em> is a richly satisfying and deep in flavour worker placement game about making fine wine. The Essential Edition which is now most commonly available includes a few minor features from the Tuscany expansion based on feedback into the designer, creating a much finer vintage. 18: Blood Rage<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0They say the oldies are often the best and there isn’t much to say about Blood Rage<\/em> that hasn’t been said… Except perhaps that whilst it is exceptionally good and features some of the best miniatures in any game, it isn’t by any means the highest rated area control game on this list. 17: Majesty<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Do you remember when I said that Hotshots<\/em> was the last surprise in the list? Well, I lied. Majesty<\/em> is another title that I felt delivered on its brief almost flawlessly. It’s a fast paced, beautiful card game that is perhaps a little overproduced thanks to the poker chips that it uses to track score, but even so, it’s a superb gateway game that has been somewhat overlooked during 2018. Don’t make the same mistake \u2014 here’s our review<\/a>.<\/p>\n

16: Orc-Lympics<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Orc-Lympics<\/em> may be a simple, small card game, but it’s a fantastic one that features several mechanics and a lot of personality. Draft your team, compete in events, win medals and admire the gorgeous artwork. A truly versatile game that combines travel game dimensions with a simple learning curve and a lot of depth, Orc-Lympics<\/em> is worth reading about in detail<\/a>.<\/p>\n

15: Charterstone<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Jamey Stegmaier and his team appear twice in this list, with both games from Stonemaier Games in our top twenty. That should say enough about the quality of games like Viticulture<\/em> and Charterstone<\/span><\/em>, but with regard to Charterstone<\/em> specifically, this lighter worker placement and euro game is packed full of charm and surprise. It’s the first legacy game on our list, meaning that there are several hidden compartments within the box that will be revealed over time. It also means that the game introduces new players gently, before later introducing new mechanics over the course of about fifteen games. We felt that Charterstone<\/em> was close to masterpiece quality when we reviewed<\/a> it, so why not check it out.<\/p>\n

14: Quadropolis<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0As far as building games are concerned, Quadropolis<\/em> is one of the best out there. We do have a review for Suburbia<\/em> coming in 2019 that might mean Quadropolis<\/em>\u00a0suffers a minor knock to its confidence, but it is nonetheless an attractive, exciting and very enjoyable game. Simple and complex modes make it ideal for family buyers as well as experienced gamers. You can read more about it here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

13: Black Orchestra<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0As I discussed in my review<\/a> earlier in 2018, no one should feel aggrieved about the idea of plotting to kill Hitler. Black Orchestra<\/em> is a game focused on doing exactly that \u2014 using some interesting pick up and deliver mechanics, as well as automated AI that ranges from hard to very, very hard to defeat. Gather up your mates, get a few beers in, it’s time to plot a murder!<\/p>\n

12: Feudum<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Possibly the heaviest game we’ve ever reviewed<\/a> at BigBossBattle, Feudum<\/em> is the singular vision of designer Mark Swanson, who has poured his heart and soul into every intricate rule and beautifully crafted component. This isn’t a game for newcomers to the hobby, but it is a game filled with deep, powerful mechanisms that deserve to be explored in detail. It looks like a work of art when setup and trust me, it’s worth persevering with.<\/p>\n

11: Sailing Towards Osiris<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0The Pharaoh is dead, long live the Pharaoh! But wait…. Who will it be? The dignitary who builds the greatest structures in honour of the old Pharaoh, of course. Sailing Towards Osiris<\/em> is a beautiful, thematic worker placement game about good timing, bartering with your opponents and doing whatever it takes to win. It’s a fast, clever game that allows the players to make powerful choices. I highly recommended it in my review<\/a> and it remains one of my go-to games to this day.<\/p>\n

10: Lords of Hellas<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Anyone that read my review<\/a> of Lords of Hellas<\/em> will probably have realised that without it appearing anywhere else in the top ten, it simply had to be number one. I love, love, love Lords of Hellas<\/em> and almost everything about it. The player boards that steadily lock out more and more possible moves until a refresh action is taken are fantastic, but that feature pales into comparison when you look at the four different ways in which the game can be won. Killing monsters, claiming land, building temples or constructing huge modular statues and defending them, all of which feel thematic, balanced and exciting. It’s just awesome. That said, Lords of Hellas<\/em> doesn’t so much bring ideas of its own \u2014 it simply aggregates every good idea that we’ve seen elsewhere (including a full solo campaign) and then brings them together. You know what? I’m OK with that \u2014 Lords of Hellas<\/em> is my game of 2018.<\/p>\n

\"Frostpunk:<\/p>\n

9: Frostpunk: The Board Game<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong> Frostpunk: The Board Game<\/em> is almost perfect in respect to how well it recreates the feel and theme of the popular videogame (which we also love here at B3.) The only reason it isn’t higher in the list (not that 9th is anything to be sniffed at) is because it is so brutal and so hardcore that it really lends itself to solo play, or at most, two players, and in any case it’s very, very difficult to beat. This makes it a tough sell for most people, but if you’d like to know more, check out our review here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Part deck-builder, all race game, The Quest for El Dorado<\/em> is fast-paced, fun and clever – making players of all ages invest their focus into the game and returning that commitment with rewarding gameplay. 7: Wonderlands War<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong> In Wonderlands War<\/em>, players will control characters from the classic Lewis Carroll tale as they compete to control different areas of Wonderland, scoring points on a round by round basis. The twist here is that to resolve conflicts, players will draw tokens from a bag (including madness) that might add or detract from their score. With a new expansion due in 2023, Wonderlands War<\/em> is already a good game, and looks set to expand for those who want more. Our review is here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In brief:<\/strong> Have you ever wondered what it might feel like to run your own stately home (think Downton Abbey before it outstayed its welcome)? Well, now you can – thanks to our current favourite heavy game – Obsession<\/em>. This superb effort from Dan Hallagan and Kayenta Games is a big, heavy eurogame with some uniquely thematic elements including card play, family scandals and a whole lot of keeping up with the Joneses! Read more about it here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"The5: The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong> If you love social interaction games that play fairly quickly, but also carry some of the weight of a “proper” board game, then chances are you want to get stuck in to The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31. In this thematic re-enactment of the iconic movie, players will draw cards secretly to inform them of their infection status – with human players wanting to escape alive, and infected players hoping to thwart them (and potentially also escape to spread the infection further.) Fantastic, raucous fun!<\/p>\n

\"Rurik:<\/p>\n

4: Rurik: Dawn of Kiev<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong> If you enjoy the visual appeal and mild contention of a dudes on a map game, but enjoy the idea of clever worker placement games, you’ll love Rurik: Dawn of Kiev<\/em>. This 2019 Kickstarter had a very brief retail run and there aren’t many around, but despite its rarity, this modern classic is well worth tracking down – definitely a favourite, as you’ll discover in my review<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rurik: Dawn of Kiev<\/em> is sadly no longer available, but perhaps you’ll find it in your friendly local game store.<\/p>\n

3: Zombicide: 2nd Edition<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong> As I’ll explain in my detailed review<\/a>, Zombicide: 2nd Edition<\/em> is probably the ultimate dice-rolling, zombie-blasting cooperative experience. With many expansions (including several that can be printed for free) and support for one to six players, this is a fun, versatile game that can match your requirements for either easier or harder games, and offers loads of fun in whatever guise you play it.<\/p>\n

2: Ankh: Gods of Egypt<\/em><\/h3>\n

In brief:<\/strong>\u00a0Ankh<\/i>, we think, is without doubt Eric M. Lang’s masterpiece. The final game in a trilogy which also includes Rising Sun and Blood Rage, this game features amazing artwork and components, huge, well detailed miniatures and a ton of optional expansions – but more importantly – it’s an incredibly solid gaming experience.<\/p>\n

Featuring a unique “merge” mechanic that takes place towards the mid-late game, Ankh<\/em> sees up to five players competing to be the most powerful (and ultimately, only) God in Egyptian history. With a pantheon of Gods to choose from and a whole host of optional monsters, this is a highly variable, extremely thematic game that deserves its spot in this list.
