Songbird Symphony<\/em> is a fun platforming game infused with rhythm-game elements. Birb\u2019<\/strong>s journey to discover who they are is a long one filled with tough, musical battles, but one well worth the ride.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I first stumbled across Joysteak\u2019<\/a>s Songbird Symphony<\/em> a few months back while I was collecting some free games for a friend of mine to play through. The game\u2019s wonderful art style and catchy music immediately pulled me in \u2014 its production quality made it stick out like a sore thumb. An elaborate intro, tutorial and fantastic pacing all made it very clear that Songbird Symphony<\/em> was something special.<\/p>\n

\"Songbird<\/a>Joysteak\u2019s debut title is nothing short of heart-warming. It is surprising that the whole thing has been put together by such a small team in such a short time.<\/p>\n

Birb, the protagonist, sets out on a journey to find out about their parentage, convinced early on that their current guardian \u2014 an utterly different type of bird \u2014 is not their real parent. It\u2019s not a short journey \u2014 charming insects and muddling an owl are a few of the things you\u2019ll be doing between the tight platforming sections. Each musical challenge takes on a different form, or a different style of music. It is truly reminiscent of the small uptick of music that formed during the sixth console generation \u2014 Samba de Amigo<\/em> and Gitaroo Man<\/em> specifically \u2014 which thrived until Guitar Hero<\/em> and the subsequent movement switched the rhythm genre over to real-world songs.<\/p>\n

Regardless, there\u2019s a catchy beat.to each of Songbird Symphony<\/em>\u2019s songs. They\u2019re all masterfully created, and the obvious bonus of having the game\u2019s creators also be the songs\u2019 creators comes in the ability to design the game around its interactions and requirements \u2014 every beat can be animated and vice versa.<\/p>\n

\"Songbird<\/a>It isn\u2019t even the wonderful rhythm elements that complete the game experience. The platforming, as with both the music and visual style, feels fantastic. It\u2019s rare for an indie platformer to get a good \u2018jump\u2019 in place, but Songbird Symphony<\/em> was almost there, even in its early build.<\/p>\n

The demo for Songbird Symphony is still available; you can play it in-browser at Armor Games<\/a> or download the build via Itch.io<\/a>. The developers, and new publisher <\/em>pQube, are targeting a release date of 2019, with plans to launch for Windows PCs.<\/em><\/p>\n
